Two AI tools for the customs declaration
Digicust AthrenNote: this page is published by Athren, one of the two products compared. Every statement about Digicust is a quotation or a paraphrase of Digicust’s own website, with the source beside it. Last checked 5 October 2026.
The short version
Digicust is an AI platform from Vienna that prepares customs declarations, tariff classification, export control and audits for the customs software a team already uses; Athren prepares the import declaration from the shipment email, and your declarant files it. Neither tool acts as the declarant itself; Digicust offers partners who do. D2D16D19
Digicust
- Digicust calls itself the AI layer in front of the customs platform a team already uses: documents, emails and ERP exports go in, validated declaration data goes into the system the team files in. D15D24
- By Digicust’s own account the declarant is always the broker that files, under its own EORI; Digicust does not act as customs representative, but offers direct and indirect representation through vetted partners. D16D17D19D20
- Beyond declarations the platform covers, in its own words, tariff classification, export control, audits and master data, in more than 30 countries. D2D32
- Digicust publishes no price; its pricing page offers an ROI calculator, a demo and a test account. D49D50
Athren
- Athren reads the shipment email with the invoice, the packing list and the bill of lading, fills in the import declaration from them and proposes a commodity code where the invoice is clear.
- Where the invoice is not enough, Athren writes the question the tariff asks, with the invoice line outlined. Your declarant decides every code.
- Your declarant downloads the prepared declaration and files it in the customs software they already use. Athren files nothing and connects to nothing.
- Athren does this one job, the import declaration from the shipment email, for customs brokers in Germany and the Netherlands. Athren publishes no price.
When each tool fits
When Digicust is the better fit
- When declaration data should flow straight into your customs software: Digicust names maintained connectors to ten customs platforms and a REST API. D25D10
- When a partner should file for you: Digicust offers direct and indirect representation through vetted local partners, in more than 30 countries by its own account. D19D20D86
- When you want export, transit, export control, audits or master data covered by the same tool as import. D2D31
- When certificates decide: Digicust names ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and an IEEE CertifAIed certificate issued by TÜV SÜD. D53D54
- When you want a tool with named customers and case studies; Digicust has worked on this since 2020. D73D66
When Athren is the better fit
- When you want to connect nothing: Athren needs no link to your customs software and no rollout. Your declarant downloads the declaration.
- When your declarant should decide every code: Athren proposes and asks, it approves nothing and transmits nothing.
- When the case starts with the email: the commercial invoice, the packing list and the bill of lading, and nothing else.
- When you are a customs broker in Germany or the Netherlands and want a tool for exactly one job: preparing the import declaration.
Side by side
| Criterion | Digicust, by its own website | Athren | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| What goes in | Commercial invoices, waybills, delivery notes, packing lists, preference documents, Excel, XML and bulk PDFs; by forwarding to a dedicated email address, REST API, SFTP, email or EDI. | The shipment email with the commercial invoice, the packing list and the bill of lading, as PDFs or spreadsheets. | D7D8D10 |
| What comes out | An approval-ready declaration dataset with validation findings and supporting evidence, as a structured payload for the connected customs system. | A filled-in import declaration, header and every line, each value with the document it was read from, to download. | D13 |
| Who files the declaration | The broker that files, under its own EORI; Digicust does not act as customs representative. On request, vetted partners file in direct or indirect representation. | Your declarant, in the customs software you use today. Athren files nothing. | D16D17D19D20 |
| Connection to customs software | The existing customs system stays; Digicust names maintained connectors to ASYCUDA, DAKOSY, dbh, BEO, ZOBA i-TMS, DHF Zolaris, LDV-Systema, Format, Mercurio and AEB, and speaks of more than 13 partner platforms. | None. Athren connects to no customs software; your declarant downloads the declaration. | D24D25D26 |
| Rollout | Six to ten weeks from start to production by Digicust’s own documentation; a first broker connection usually two weeks. | Send us 20 past cases; we prepare each one, you judge the result. | D81D80 |
| Where the person decides | Routine cases move through the configured workflow automatically, by Digicust’s account; named users review exceptions and keep control over approval and transmission. | At every code and every case: a proposal stays a proposal until your declarant decides and presses Release. | D40 |
| Countries and customs systems | More than 30 countries by its home page, which names among its filing systems ATLAS (Germany), e-dec (Switzerland) and CDS (UK). No Dutch system appears on the pages read; Belgium and the Netherlands were announced in January 2025 as a goal for the end of 2025. | Customs brokers in Germany and the Netherlands. | D32D31D35D37 |
| Free tool | Four free tools (tariff classification, BTI search, sanctions screening, export control) against a business email address; the tariff result is not binding, by Digicust’s own note. | A tariff code finder and an import duty calculator, with no account. | D44D45D48 |
| Price | Not published. The pricing page offers an ROI calculator, a demo and a test account. | Not published. The way in is 20 past cases. | D49D50 |
| Certificates and hosting | ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and IEEE CertifAIed, issued by TÜV SÜD, by its home page; hosted in EU data centres. | Athren runs on Google Cloud in the Netherlands; before the first real case we sign a data processing agreement. | D53D54D56 |
| Company | Digicust FlexCo, Vienna Airport, since 2020; managing directors Thomas Übellacker and Matthias Pfeiler. | Athren, Amsterdam, two co-founders. | D61D63D64D66 |
| Website languages | Twenty language versions by its sitemap. | English, German, Dutch. | D71 |
| Customers named on the website | Yes, with case studies. | None named. | D73 |

Questions and answers
What is the difference between Digicust and Athren?
Scope. Digicust prepares, in its own words, declarations, tariff classification, export control and audits for the connected customs software, and offers partners who file; Athren prepares the import declaration from the shipment email, with no connection, and your declarant files it. D2D15D19
Does either tool file the declaration itself?
No. By Digicust’s own account the declarant is always the broker that files, or Digicust’s partners in direct or indirect representation on request. Athren files nothing; your declarant files the declaration in your own customs software. D16D19D20
What does Digicust cost?
Digicust publishes no price. On the day it was read (see the sources) its pricing page offered an ROI calculator, a demo and a test account. Athren publishes no price either; the way in is 20 past cases. D49D50
Are there alternatives to Digicust?
Several vendors prepare customs declarations or tariff classifications with AI. The overview of AI customs software describes eight of them in their own words, Digicust and Athren included, and says who files in each case. D2
Where is the data processed?
Digicust names hosting in EU data centres with optional customer-managed keys. Athren runs on Google Cloud in the Netherlands and signs a data processing agreement with your agency before the first real case. D56
